During the COVID-19 initial surge that rocked our country, FHCC made the difficult decision to close its doors to outside visitors for increased patient and staff safety. The intensive care unit nurses knew from evidence-based practice studies that family interaction especially in the critical care environment is essential to patient engagement and healing. The incredible nursing team in ICU worked with the ICU director and the TeleHealth department to get iPads with video capability set up so that both patients and their loved ones could continue to see each other during this tough time. This new technology in ICU allowed staff nurses to video chat family members securely and comfortably from the negative pressure rooms of COVID-19 patients. The iPads were also used in other patient rooms after careful sanitation to decrease patient and family anxiety related to the no visitation policy. Thanks to the resourcefulness of the ICU nursing team in collaborating with Telehealth, increased patient and family satisfaction abounded in the unit.
