From the moment we met her, she cared for my son as if he was her own. She was highly competent, engaged, and compassionate and held space for all of us as we worked through so many layers of his diagnosis.
My son was transferred emergently to UWMC in February of this year for heart failure. It happened so fast and was very unexpected, as he is in his mid-20s. We had been told that he may need a heart transplant from an outside hospital, but we were hopeful that UWMC could give us some clearer answers. Ingrid was my son's nurse on his first full day in the ICU. From the moment we met her, she cared for my son as if he was her own. She was highly competent, engaged, and compassionate and held space for all of us as we worked through so many layers of his diagnosis. She sat with us at the bedside and asked about our family, got to know us as a family unit, advocated for my son during some of his darkest days, and made us laugh with her stories and comments. She became my son's primary caregiver and saw him through his pre-transplant days, as well as his post-transplant days, even coming to check on him when he was transferred to the floor. Every day that she was his nurse, his well-being was her utmost priority. I knew that whenever Ingrid was working I could relax because my son would receive the highest care. As a fellow healthcare worker who has seen both sides of this now, being able to let go as a parent to place my son's life in someone else's hands speaks volumes about Ingrid's role as a caregiver. Our experience through this very complicated time was better because of her.
