Intensive Care Unit at Atrium Health Cleveland

An elderly dementia patient was sundowning and repeatedly attempted to get out of bed so he could ‘get to work’, - he didn’t want to be late. At first, Taylor and Tasha got him into a wheelchair to give him a few laps around the unit…this lasted about 30 minutes. The patient was insistent that he needed to get to work… and luckily his manager ‘Alyssa Balmas’ approved his overtime and time and half pay so he could have Christmas money. So, the patient was promoted to ‘Manager of the Day’ and Taylor and Tasha parked him at the desk in his wheelchair. The patient was assigned the task of putting blank labels on nursing assignment sheet forms. This highly important work required his full attention and dedication. This was an example of excellent teamwork that not only prevented a fall but also enriched a patient’s day during his stay. I am so proud to call them my work family and my friends. At no point did anyone express even the slightest bit of frustration or belittling. It was smooth, effortless teamwork.
