I am truly inspired by the love and dedication the 9 West Doan Staff have shown a very challenging patient. This patient has not only tested their patience, but has questioned many people's faith.
The staff on 9 West Doan have provided care to a severely burned patient on and off for over a year now. During that time period, she has challenged them physically, mentally, and emotionally. Although faced with significant challenges, the staff has committed themselves to providing the highest quality of care and embracing this patient like a member of their own family.
Many staff have been thoughtful about this patient's preferences and needs. They provided her with some of her favorite foods (chili cheese fries), accessories (a head covering, homemade lip balm, a bracelet), and distractions in the form of movie sharing.
The staff makes it a point to talk with this patient and check up on her even when she is not assigned as their patient for the day. Here are just a few examples witnessed:
•Talking to this patient about life and sharing their fondness of good looking gentlemen together
•Checking on this patient randomly to make sure she is comfortable
•Telling this patient they love and care for her
•Enlightening this patient about new hair styles
•Visiting this patient and offering anything to make her feel more like one of us
•Proactively offering to help give this patient medication when others are busy
•Making sure this patient has their favorite drink ready for her before her dressing changes
•Always making sure this patient stays safe
•Looking and asking about resources so this patient could have more head coverings so they feel more like a woman
•Personally open or close this patient's door, multiple times in one sitting, to their liking
This patient requires daily dressing changes or daily dressing checks. Going through this treatment is extremely taxing on both patient and staff. However, there are moments where one will sometimes hear and see laughing from the burn treatment room or this patient's room. Everyone should be commended for going above and beyond and who take that extra bit of time to make sure this patient is clean, safe, and comfortable.
Although many have been called out individually as evidenced above, this is truly a collaborative team effort, one in which each and every staff member has contributed.
These are just a few examples of the wonderful personalized care the staff have provided this patient. It has truly been a team effort to help this individual. Many times staff have questioned if what they are doing is correct or could they be doing more. There is nothing more than one individual can give to another person than love.
This staff has truly giving so much of their heart and soul. I feel very confident saying this is the most love and safety this patient has ever experienced. It makes me extremely proud to be a part of this team who has gone above and beyond their calling for another.
