Irene Stewart is such an outstanding RN every day she comes to work. She exceeds in all 3 categories of compassion, empathy and going above and beyond. She has been the primary nurse for a 25-year-old patient on Med 4 who has been on the unit admitted for almost a year. He underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant and had many complications. Once readmitted after the transplant he never went back home. Irene is so caring and empathetic towards him and his needs. She calls Med 4 on her days off to check on him and see how he's doing. She cooks food from home and brings it in for him. She spends endless hours in his room speaking to him not only about his medical issues but about everyday life. She is consistent day in and day out with the care she provides on the unit not only towards this one patient but all who she cares for. Irene had left CCMC many years ago to work in the newborn nursery in LIJ. She returned to Med 4 due to her passion for pediatric oncology. She missed the patients and their families. She missed making an important impact in their lives day to day. Irene mentors many new nursing students on Med 4 from different schools. She enjoys taking students under her wing. Her devotion to nursing is palpable every day you see her work.
