Irina can do it with care and success
I've worked with Irina Kalustyan for a number of years. Coming from another hospital, she quickly adapted to UWMC and quickly became one of our charge nurses bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experiences and sharing and displaying her style as she worked with other nurses and patients.
Irina is pleasant to work with, adaptable, kind, flexible, helpful, and calm in every way. She is responsible and responsive to the needs of others.
Irina's most outstanding skill, which is a real plus in our pre-procedure area, is PIV insertion. Even in patients who label themselves as "difficult," Irina can do it with care and success almost always, using an ultrasound in a very skillful way. Most often, she is our go-to person when we have trouble with an IV, and she always willingly and skillfully inserts it with a smile. Most of these difficult IV patients have fears, but she calms them, giving them reassurance saying, "I can do it. Just try to relax," explaining very carefully while she works. This shows her compassion to patients and her exemplary practice not just to patients but to staff, as well, giving them support so IVs are done, labs are drawn, and the patient is ready at the target time for the procedure. This makes for a satisfying experience for patients and staff.
Irina does super nurse work when she is a charge nurse for the day. Our peri procedural area handles a large number of cardiac cases per day plus IR patients which can be very challenging: managing the board, working with staff, juggling the workload between pre and post procedure, making sure breaks are done, keeping patients on time and ready for their scheduled time, answering the phone, inserting IVs, working with 4SE and cath lab, talking to patients and families, calming, updating when necessary, bedside care as demanded (which requires patience), critical thinking and decision making, collaborating, understanding and motivating attitude, creating trust and respect to keep the flow going to achieve better outcomes and satisfaction for patients and staff. This is nursing in its entirety, and Irina does it in stride exemplifying the nursing image.
