Ms. Florendo witnessed an unresponsive child inside the car in front of the DC VA building on her way out when a family desperately cried for help. As an experienced nurse with adults and children in crises, she acted on impulse. She performed CPR on the pulseless child, stabilize her, then took the child to DCVAMC ER. She was aware that time is of the essence for a successful outcome. In addition to the details of her heroic performance, she coordinated with the ER team by explaining what had prompted her to act in the emergency response situation. She was an advocate for the family due to the language barrier as they only speak Spanish. As a result of her leadership and confidence in responding immediately to the code situation and coordinating with the family, the child survived and was transferred to Children’s Hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

She truly inspires healthcare professionals at VAMC DC. The staff in the various units, including the ER, PACU, SDPU, IR, 2D, 3E, clinics, radiology, anesthesia, and surgery teams, were impressed by what she had done and expressed that they would follow her endeavor in a similar circumstance. Through her attention to detail and promptness, she was able to exhibit the VA Core Values such as integrity. This demonstrates her having strong moral principles by acting honorably or doing the right thing when she saw that the child needed her help even though she did not know the family, and her commitment by being dedicated to her profession as a nurse to save lives. Advocating for the patient's right to receive prompt care at the VA Medical Center Emergency Room and by helping the family arrange for an interpreter so they can communicate their needs and learn about the patient's condition. Respect by understanding the family's limited English proficiency, remaining calm in the face of the circumstance.

Commitment to excellence by going above and above the call of duty, she demonstrated her dedication to the basic values of the VAMC DC. Ms. Florendo’s courage in her performance demonstrate to speak out for the child served as a trigger for the many staff members and healthcare professionals to recognize their own capacity to apply their expertise to effectively speak up for their patients to save lives. In the best interest of patient care, all healthcare professionals used this method, which can be taught and learned by motivated nurses.
