Irma has given me the space and opportunity to find my voice and grow as a professional and as a nurse educator. She does this for not just her staff, but for anyone who knocks on her door asking for help, guidance, or advice.
Irma creates a work environment where we are not only encouraged to share our opinions, but she also listens to them. She is always hearing our needs and making changes to suit them. Some examples would be adding weekly staff meetings, purchasing the tools and equipment we need to do our jobs, and being our best friend at work. Irma is a great leader because of the person she is. Every day, she listens to our frustrations, offers counsel, gives advice, and genuinely cares about us as individuals. She is not only our go-to person, but other leaders in the hospital see her this way, too. She encourages us to take time off and is flexible when outside commitments come up, even if it is inconvenient to her. She celebrates our accomplishments, big or small.

Irma is the kind of boss that everyone should get the privilege of having. She is a leader for her department. She empowers each of her staff to do their best every day and to continue to grow and reach their goals and then some. She encourages and empowers each of us every day, even if she doesn’t realize it.

Irma has given me the space and opportunity to find my voice and grow as a professional and as a nurse educator. She does this for not just her staff, but for anyone who knocks on her door asking for help, guidance, or advice. Irma is well accomplished and respected, and I hope to grow into a leader like her one day.

In summary, anyone can give directions to a group of people. It takes a special person to be a leader who cares and supports their staff, develops a sense of unity and teamwork, and makes each person feel seen. Even though she is new here, that is what sets Irma apart and makes her deserving of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
