Isabel was an evening student at Jersey College during the time our campus was closed and all teaching/learning was online due to COVID-19. I only met her "in person" when she came to take her progression exam. Isabel shared with me that she had attended other nursing schools but did not complete her LPN because of life challenges but she was determined to finish. We met virtually every Saturday for 18 weeks and then privately via Zoom for post-conference. We spoke about her academic progress but also about her life and her years of experience as a Medical Assistant at various clinics and private physician offices. Isabel has a passion for extraordinary patient care and loves all living creatures including the pit bull she rescued and her children, grandchildren, and extended family. She also is an amazing baker and showed me some of the cakes she designed for various family events. Isabel puts her heart and soul into nursing and does not take it lightly because the journey was long and challenging but she persevered despite many obstacles. She has recently accepted a job at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital. This accomplishment is even greater because, until recently, it was very difficult to be hired as an LPN at this institution. Isabel has all the ingredients of the "ideal" nurse: compassion, genuine caring, intelligence, and a willingness to go "above and beyond". She has made me very proud as one of her teachers at Jersey College.
