I want to recognize and praise Izzy Osorio's amazing compassion in a very tough case last week. Our patient had struggled with COVID since late September, having been placed on ECMO and subsequently underwent intubation and tracheostomy. Unfortunately, he decompensated further and was ultimately found to have CNS vasculitis resulting in multifocal cerebral infarcts. Izzy helped the wife process this complication with the utmost compassion. She emotionally supported the wife and other family members as Critical Care Medicine and Neurology explained the debilitating nature of these infarcts and as his family then deliberated on goals of care. Once a decision was reached that he would want to be transitioned to comfort measures, she facilitated visitation by his young sons, and she then even went beyond the call of duty to translate when Life Gift decided to approach the family about organ donation at the last moment. Izzy is a profoundly patient- and family-centered nurse. She is an asset to the MHTW MICU and the Memorial Hermann family.
