Ivy Antolec, RN

Earlier this year, I had major surgery. Going in, I was only slightly nervous, but that would not prepare me for the night ahead. After surgery, I was brought to the Observation Unit to spend the night. I faintly remember my husband and mother leaving, but that evening, as the anesthesia wore off, my pain became an issue. I received the over-the-counter pain medications as well as an oral narcotic. The nurses attempted to have me stand at the bedside; however, the pain was so intense, I couldn’t even get to the bedside. At shift change, the nurses came into my room to give report. This is when I met Ivy. She was told of my pain and said she would be back to see me after report. Ivy came back as she said and asked how I was doing. I was still in so much pain that I was nauseous and literally beside myself. Being a nurse myself, I felt guilty for being “that patient”. The patient who needed more. I cringed when I would have to press the call light. I disliked having to ask for things. Ivy helped me get my pain under control and offered her expertise in this type of recovery. She assured me that I could call her whenever I needed something and that I would feel better come morning when the packing could come out (she was right)! She was an angel, offering words of encouragement and allowing me to rest as I was able. After the packing came out, I was able to get up out of bed for the first time (I had attempted 2 other times with no success). Ivy checked on me throughout the night, kept my pain manageable, and made me feel like I mattered/was her priority, even though I know she cared for others that night. In a truly vulnerable time, Ivy made me feel safe and heard. I am truly grateful for her care, and ABMC is blessed to have her on its team.
