Her act of kindness turned my terrifying moment into one where I felt genuinely cared for.
I am honored to recognize Jackelyn Castanon because of the extraordinary compassion, skill, and dedication she demonstrated during my care. From the very first moment Jackelyn entered my hospital room, I felt a sense of comfort and safety.
She took the time to introduce herself, explain every step of my treatment in a way I could understand, and made sure I always felt heard. No question was ever too small, and she never made me feel rushed. One moment that stood out to me was when I was getting prepared to have my colonoscopy done and felt overwhelming anxiety, feeling an anxiety attack coming on.
As a man in my 50s who’s been afraid of colonoscopies due to a family member having their bowel perforated, going into the center was a nightmare I needed to overcome. Instead of overlooking my feelings, Jackelyn stayed with me until my heart rate slowed and I was able to relax. She held my hand, reassured me with gentle words, and told me how brave I was for putting my health first. Her sweet words resonate with me to this day, and I know I made the right choice.
Her act of kindness turned my terrifying moment into one where I felt genuinely cared for. Beyond that moment, she also went above and beyond for my family. She updated my loved ones, addressed their concerns, and made sure they felt just as supported as I did. Her empathy extended far beyond the clinical tasks. In that moment, I wasn’t just another patient to her; she made me feel like family, and for that, I will forever be grateful for her kindness.
Jackelyn exemplifies the very essence of the DAISY Award: extraordinary compassion, clinical excellence, and human connection. I will never forget the comfort, dignity, and hope they gave me during one of the scariest times of my life.
