We have a patient on the unit who has had more than a rough and eventful course of stay for over 40 days now. Unfortunately, his course of events has left him confined to his room and his bed because he is unable to move his extremities independently.
As one could imagine, he has been anxious, frightened, and upset. On this particular day, he was lucky enough to have Jackie as his nurse.
Jackie went out of her way to make sure this patient was relieved of his anxiety for a few hours. He mouthed to Jackie (the patient is trach-dependent on the vent) "I need to get out of here". Without thinking, Jackie worked with respiratory therapy and was able to take the patient on a trip around the hospital in his bed. She took him down to the Atrium so he could look at the fish and feel the breeze from the outside. When she brought him back to the unit, he looked like a new man. His eyes were lit up, and he was smiling.
This is just one of the many examples of how Jackie goes out of her way to show her compassion for her patients.
