Jacky Canas, BSN, RN

Jacky was caring for a sweet elderly gentleman who had a poor prognosis. He had been married to his lovely wife for many, many years. Both the patient and his wife were cognizant of the sad reality that his life was nearing the end during his time in the ICU. Jacky recognised how heavy this must have been on both of them. Through talking with them, Jacky learned about some of their life stories and things they enjoyed. Using this information, Jacky made arrangements for them to enjoy one last ice cream sundae bar together- something the two of them had enjoyed many times before. When appropriate, Jacky was able to change his oxygen face mask to a high-flow cannula, and not only provided ice cream and toppings but also set up a table for the two of them to share a special final moment. This will be a core memory for the wife and their family regarding the respect, empathy, and compassion we provided at Intermountain Health.
