Frightened, alone, and severely ill, I drove myself to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional and into the emergency room. They informed me that I needed a battery of tests first; however, it was not long after that a nurse came into my room and told me my gallbladder needed to be removed ASAP. I was extremely sick. What should have been outpatient surgery or at most a one-day event wound up being a five-day hospital stay.

I was truly alone. We had no family close, and my husband was in another local hospital from a serious fall that occurred a few days earlier, which caused him to shatter his femur; our only child was several states away in law school. So, I was truly alone, frightened, and, to put it mildly, in a lot of pain.

It was then that I met, who I now call “my angel nurse”, Jackie (Jaclyn) Twigg. She was cheerful, caring, and intuitive about my special circumstances. I explained to Jackie my current situation and that I would not have anyone with me during this frightful time. She was so very compassionate and listened to me so intently.

During my stay, Jackie probably checked on me more than needed because she knew I had no one there for me. She was always so gentle, handling all that she did with care. We talked about life, family, and the upcoming birth of her second child. Just her spending a little extra time with me made me feel like I wasn’t truly alone.

One day she even bought me a beautiful vase filled with the most beautiful flowers! Oh, how that blessed my heart. This entire hospital was so above the norm with caring nurses. Jackie stood out, however!

As an avid scrapbooker, I took several pictures of my ‘eventful’ stay, and I am thankful for the pictures I have of my angel nurse, Jackie, and the lovely flowers that she brought me.

It has been exactly two years since this event, and I have never forgotten Jackie or the genuine care that she gave at a time that was so difficult for me.

Thank you, Jaclyn, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
