After facing several pregnancy-related complications over the course of 2024, we were very anxious while arriving at BIDMC for a c-section to help safely bring our first baby into the world. As new parents, we had absolutely no idea what to expect regarding the delivery process or the early days of life with a newborn. Even with our own backgrounds in healthcare, we still found ourselves on edge, given the swirling mixture of excitement, uncertainty, and fear surrounding the procedure and recovery. After arriving on the labor and delivery floor, we were almost immediately put at ease after meeting Jacob, the nurse who was thankfully paired to our case. What an incredible gem of a human being. It’s honestly challenging for us to summarize the long list of things. Jacob Ochoa made a lasting impression on us. ​

First, Jacob expressed curiosity about our backgrounds, current feelings, worries, needs, hopes, questions, etc., and took the time to connect with us on a human level. Jacob listened diligently, offered genuine validation, and allowed plenty of time to ask questions, ensuring we fully understood what to expect at every step. As we struggled to make an in-the-moment decision about whether to try an external cephalic version, ​

Jacob ensured we had ample information from our medical team as well as time to privately discuss the decision as a couple. He supported our choice, control, and autonomy while also helping us feel at peace once we came to a conclusion.
Then, as the medical team placed the needle for my spinal anesthesia in the operating room, Jacob stayed right by my side and offered reassurance and distraction while also ensuring I was okay physically and mentally. During these tense moments, Jacob's thoughtfulness and talent as a nurse were on full display as they even remembered the names of our pets from our discussions earlier that morning. Jacob's thoughtfulness and steadfast presence brought me so much comfort in this moment. Throughout the procedure, Jacob maintained an atmosphere of lightness and joy. Jacob hand-crafted an exceptionally well-made newborn baby bow that even the routine team members noticed and reflected. Jacob reminded my husband to take lots of pictures to preserve this moment for our family. Jacob ensured I was still able to hold my baby as the doctors finished closing my abdomen. Throughout the entire surgery, Jacob really helped us slow down and take in this incredible moment. ​

Immediately following the delivery, Jacob carefully taught us how to feed and care for our baby girl and started helping us build confidence as new parents. Throughout the day, Jacob was professional, patient, knowledgeable, and tireless in their efforts to ensure we had a magical birth experience. Jacob was truly an exceptional advocate, provider, and team member throughout the entire process. Almost six months later, we still think of Jacob and feel immensely grateful for their wise, kind, and steady presence during one of the most life-changing days of our lives. Our sweet daughter is the center of our world, and we couldn’t be happier with the care we received during this pivotal time in our lives. We extend our deepest gratitude to Jacob and their wonderful team for their dedication and kindness. It made a substantial difference in our lives. ​
