Jacob has demonstrated exceptional caring towards patients and fellow nursing students. Jacob cared for an adolescent patient admitted for an exacerbation of a chronic illness. This patient had lost her foster caregiver to an MVA one week prior to admission and had lost her mother to an MVA when she was a young child. The patient was depressed and had a flat affect towards everyone who entered the room. Many staff members felt as though dealing with the patient's psychosocial issues were important but beyond their comfort level.  Jacob was not deterred. He sat with the patient when not busy and the patient eventually opened up to him, engaged in card playing and was smiling and laughing for the first time in days. By not giving up and talking to the patient, Jacob was able to learn about some important risk taking behavior that the patient was engaging in which he reported to the healthcare team for follow-up.
Jacob has also shown exceptional concern for his classmates. A fellow student 's parent was admitted to the hospital for a potentially life-threatening problem. Recognizing that his classmate needed to be at the hospital with her family, Jacob went to the clinical site, reviewed the chart of the patient assigned to his classmate and relayed the information needed to prepare for clinical to his classmate. The classmate was able to research her patient without leaving her parent to come to the clinical site.
When Jacob had a patient with unfamiliar medical equipment, he not only researched how to use the equipment but provided several informal in-services on the equipment to his classmates during the clinical day.
