There was the added dimension of Empathy, Compassion, and Caring that went a step beyond what seems to be the expected norm for professional hospital care.
I was a patient at NMC last Monday and Tuesday recovering from my bout of “The Dreaded Kidney Stones”! During those two days, I had the good fortune of being watched over by you and your attentive crew during the 7-to-7 Day-Shift periods. What I experienced was the usual professional care and service I have come to expect at the Newton Medical Center. But in your particular case, there was the added dimension of Empathy, Compassion, and Caring that went a step beyond what seems to be the expected norm for professional hospital care.
This evening, I’ve been asked to present a verse that I recently composed at the conclusion of a Christmas Eve service at our church. It’s titled, “BE THE GIFT”, and, as you’ll note, I’ve enclosed a copy for you. The ‘pitch’ of this verse is that the Spirit of Giving that we all tend to observe and practice in sometimes superficial ways at Christmastime, is really something that we should endeavor to emulate beyond the Holiday Season and incorporate into our day-to-day lives. And, additionally, of course, the ‘Gifts’ that represent the ways in which we relate to others in Caring and Compassion are clearly and absolutely the most Genuine Gift of all! Jackie, if you read the verse, you will clearly see yourself reflected in its lines and stanzas!
I was amazed at the way that you related to my roommate and how through your language of Patience, Encouragement, Empathy, and Concern, you were able to turn his attitude from one of Abject Despair to one that reflected his Trust in all that you were doing to ease his Anxiety and Pain. My guess is that the level of Care demonstrated toward my roommate and me during my brief period of exposure to it is that modus operandi that you practice for all of your patients for 12 hours during each of your nursing practice days!
Thank God, there are those like you in our Health Care System, especially during these Trying Times. Please hang in there, be safe, and know that you are surely among the Cherished ‘Angels’ on Earth who are, themselves, a most Precious Gift to those they serve!!
