Jackie has been a nurse on 4NT for 5 years. She is regarded as a "steady, consistent" nurse who gets the job done. But Jackie goes about her job with a quiet stealth that leaves her patients in a much better place and with so much appreciation for having encountered Nurse Jackie.
Today, I would like to recognize Jackie for the "quiet storm" that she is.
Recently, Jackie celebrated a milestone birthday by going on a cruise (we were all painfully made aware of this cruise months before), we knew what it meant for her to go. Due to an unfortunate event, the trip was cut short and she had to end the cruise halfway through.
Before she left for the cruise, a young man and family had been admitted for cancer, the fight that very few want to encounter. To start his day, every morning he would walk around the unit playing his playlist of music - which was Bob Marley. Jackie bonded with him/family before the cruise.
Even though she was on the cruise of a lifetime and even though it was cut short, Jackie thought of this patient and his fight for life, and as simple as it was, she purchased a keyring for him - not just any keyring but a Bob Marley key ring. You would have thought that she had hit the lotto and shared it with him by the smile on his face! He walked the hallway singing a little louder. All of us were touched by what she did for him, but Jackie just said "it's not a big thing."Exactly what we need in this profession - "Quiet Heroes".
