Jaime floated to a unit this weekend. She was assigned to a patient that was known as a difficult patient who often times lashed out at nurses, making many nurses hesitate to take care of the patient. Jaime started her shift with some rude remarks. However, being the caring nurse that Jaime is, she decided to figure out what was going on with the patient and how she could make this hospital stay not so miserable. She soon learned that the patient had a diagnosis of cancer with mets and that was the source of his pain. The patient often times screamed at nurses and Jaime realized it was due to the unbearable pain that the patient was living with every day. Jaime decided to reach out the MDs to talk about a better pain management regimen for the patient. After a few medication changes, the patient started to appear more comfortable. The nurses on the unit noticed a decrease in call lights, no more agonizing screaming from the pain, and a much more cooperative patient. The nurses who worked on the unit for the past couple days could not believe how much the patient changed in a matter of minutes. Jaime is the type of nurse that can put all her critical thinking skills to use and with her empathy for the patient determined that there was a source of the patient's uncooperative behavior. The patient was finally able to sleep as the new pain regimen helped. Jaime has always been the nurse that stops and takes the time to understand each and every patient. She is the exact type of nurse that I would want taking care of my family if they were hospitalized. She not only takes great care of their patients, but makes sure that their family is supported as well. As a colleague, you always know that the day will be a little less hectic with Jaime by your side. We need more caring nurses like Jaime!
