Jaimie escorted the patient on a tour through the hospital and out to the park. The patient smiled and laughed. She told jokes and explained how much better she felt having the warm air on her skin.
After much deliberation and advisement, an ICU patient with multi-organ failure made the decision with her family to discontinue aggressive care. They chose to receive hospice care to increase her quality of life. After the decision to pursue supportive care the nurse explained to the patient the next step would be to transfer out of the ICU to a unit that would allow her and her family to be more comfortable. The patient asked if the new unit would have a window for her to see outside. She described to Jaimie the delight she received being outdoors. With this new knowledge, Jaimie worked out a plan to transfer the bedbound patient to a wheelchair so she could be more mobile. Then with the help of a few other staff members, she escorted the patient on a tour through the hospital and out to the park behind the MSB building. The patient smiled and laughed. She told jokes and explained how much better she felt having the warm air on her skin. After her trip through the park, Jaimie guided the patient to her new room and assisted her into the bed. The patient had the biggest smile we had seen on her face since her admission. She told her family about the experience and thanked Jaimie. Jaimie's sensitivity and compassion for her patients are nearly immeasurable. Jaimie produced an enjoyable and memorable experience for this patient just as she has done for so many others.
