There is no way that I could not have nominated this nurse for this award or at least some sort of recognition. My dad is currently still in the hospital, and I wanted the world to know how extraordinary Jamelh is. From her first encounter with my dad, she blew me away. It was like she was the Alzheimer’s whisperer. My dad has Alzheimer’s and can get agitated, combative, and aggressive, but with Jamelh, he was calm the entire time. She completely transformed him when she interacted with him because she allowed him to take his time, always spoke calmly with him, told him it was ok maybe a thousand times, and explained how she just wanted to help him while keeping him safe. She made me feel like she was taking care of her own family members with how caring she is. Jamelh took the time to brief everyone from the primary nurse, patient tech, and the sitter assigned to him on how to handle dealing with my dad. She gave them pointers on things that trigger his aggression, not to yell, and to keep the environment quiet since loud noises agitated him. How can I thank God for a nurse like this?? She even realized that I was suffering from fatigue and stress since I was there a whole two days before Jamelh, the angel, showed up. She asked me to go home and rest, she assured me everything was covered, he had a sitter, there were medications if he got agitated but that I too needed rest. When I came back, she updated me on his night, and she told me she noticed he had been wheezing and ordered a breathing treatment for Dad even though we knew it could agitate him, but when she talked to him and explained the treatment, he took it with no fighting or agitation. I live in Victoria and was afraid of leaving him, but after I saw how thorough she was in facilitating his care with the rest of the staff, I was okay with leaving him. I thank her from the bottom of my heart.
