I am nominating James for the DAISY Award because not only is he providing exceptional care to his assigned patients by showing attentiveness to detail, displaying a professional attitude, compassion, and strong communication skills, but he is also attentive to his colleagues and other patients on the unit. One example is when James recognized one of my patients as being his patient on a prior admission and was already educating the patient and provided an incentive spirometer before I got in with one myself, as if he read my mind.
Another example is when one of my patients with known mental health issues became loud and agitated at the time of the handoff report following a family phone call. I have allowed the patient to vent and call security as a show of force. James noted the situation shortly after and offered to administer PRN medication for agitation even though he also had to do his handoff report. These are only a few examples, and although James is in his first year of nursing, he shows all qualities of a competent Level II RN and beyond. He provides simply better care by treating patients, families, and colleagues with respect and dignity. He certainly is a team player and is one that you can count on to help when needed. James makes his patients feel valued by listening and meeting their needs. He is focused and determined always to provide exceptional care to his patients. I highly recommend and hope he receives the DAISY Award, not only because of my observation, but also the patient's observation as per the prior two nominations. I know James will continue to make a difference and continue to elevate his health care skills and compassion to an optimal level.
