James provided such wonderful care with a witty sense of humor and a warm personal connection.
We are 6 days into my dad's hospital stay, and my family is STILL talking about James. James was my dad's nurse for just one day in the ICU, and every day we wish he was still his nurse, not that the other nurses he had were bad, but because James was just that wonderful. James provided such wonderful care with a witty sense of humor and a warm personal connection. He made us laugh every time he came in the room, which was sorely needed as my 81-year-old dad was in a lot of pain, uncertain about what was causing his ailments and transfusions…all very scary for my dad and our family!

In the beginning of my dad's hospital stay, James was the only one to lift my dad's spirit and bring out his laughter again. He had the perfect blend of professionalism, compassion, humor, and straightforwardness to raise my dad's spirits and not let him feel sorry for himself. You could tell it was important to him to make my dad feel better physically and emotionally. He also took the time to sit with us and explained in detail my dad's condition, but did it in a way that made the information understandable for those of us not in the medical field. He was never too busy to assist my dad, talk to us, or reassure us when we were nervous about my dad's health and being in the ICU. I am pretty sure by the end of the day, my dad would have adopted him into our family if he could.
As James was leaving at the end of his shift, my dad yelled out, "Thanks for the TLC, James!" James came running back in and gave my dad the biggest hug. It put the brightest smile on my dad's face, and ours, to see how he truly cared for my father.

I think this quote from Bob Hope sums up the effect James had on my father that day in the ICU …
“I have seen what a laugh can do. It can transform almost unbearable tears into something bearable, even hopeful.”

James gave my dad his smile and hope back during a dark and painful time, and oh what a wonderful gift that was. For his amazing personality, professionalism, knowledge, strong communication skills, and caring nature.
