James came to the 8th floor in January of 2010. He was hired on the basis of a telephone interview from Vermont, during which he said he wanted to work at UCSD because “I read in US News and World Report that UCSD is one of the top hospitals in the country and I want to work for YOU.” Assigned to the night shift, he quickly acclimated to the unit routine and fell in to a friendly and professional camaraderie with his coworkers. After 5 short months, James was elected by his peers to be 8th floor Employee of the Month!
James is very well liked by his patients and frequently gets complimented in satisfaction surveys and “We Listen” compliments. Some patient comments include “James is an excellent nurse”, "He is such a hard worker. I don’t know where he gets the energy. He is funny and sweet.” "James went beyond all our expectations. His medical knowledge was very evident. Every time my father needed medication he began by verifying dosage and frequency. His constant vigilance regarding my father’s health was that of 10+ star treatment. The healthcare treatment my father received was excellent! I would like to send a note of thanks to James.
Soon after starting at UCSD James volunteered to join the Unit Based Quality Council (Shared Governance). At his first meeting he took on the responsibility of developing and spearheading a project focused on improving patient satisfaction with discharge teaching as agreed upon by the UBQC. In Spring of 2011 James studied for and passed his Orthopedic Nurse Certification.
