My son had outpatient surgery on his right shoulder in June. He had wonderful care from all staff members, but I had direct contact with one, whom I would like to acknowledge. My son is a young, athletic college student, who presented for shoulder surgery due to a sports injury. This was his very first surgery ever. He did not know what to expect. First, let me say, I was very impressed from entry into the building to discharge. We were greeted upon entry and escorted to where he needed to go.
He was met in the pre-surgical suite by James Sehen. James was very pleasant from the beginning. He was able to ease my son's pre-surgery anxiety, as well as mine. I knew my son was in good hands! He went above and beyond to make sure all our questions were answered, and my son's prescriptions were where they needed to be to reduce any unnecessary trips. He was very patient and checked on my son post-surgery as well.
I could tell James cares about his patients and what he does. I was very impressed! I know for a fact that nurses are pressed to do so many things in so little time. It is even worse now than it has ever been. I wanted him to know even though he is busy, he took the time to care for my son and I wanted to let him know that his care did not go unnoticed. Please acknowledge him for the exceptional care he gave!
I wanted to add that I was updated about my son's progress throughout his surgery. I was asked many times if I needed anything as well. This was my very first experience at Carilion New River Valley. I was so impressed that I have told everyone how great the care was! I live an hour and 15-20 minutes away from your facility, however, if I ever need anything this is the facility that I want to go to.

I was very impressed with my father's nurse, James. My father was very apprehensive and didn't really want to be there. James immediately knew how to approach my father's needs and put him at ease. I could not say enough about how well James did his job and went above and beyond. I am so happy he was able to take care of my father pre-op and post-op.
