Jim is a wonderful experienced nurse that continues to share his talents with patients, families and staff in the emergency department. He is known for being a patient advocate and helping patients and families navigate their emergency department visit. Jim has personal experience on what it means to have a voice in your health care and can relate to patient and families during their "journey" in the health care system.
Jim does not accept the status quo and wants to know why a treatment is needed for a patient. He wants to be able to explain to the patient and family so they can have a full understanding of treatment and care. Wow! He works every shift with a "pause to care" mindset. Giving his undivided attention during interactions with patients to allow the evolution of high quality conversations with families. He takes the time to listen and understand the concerns of each patient and family member. This thoughtfulness for patients and families is refreshing and should be prioritized more in healthcare. He recently had a patient with a nose bleed that was more critical than being treated. He continued to communicate with the ED providers about his concerns and advocate for the patient's needs. With his quiet and calm demeanor Jim can hone into the small things that can be missed in a patient assessment and bring them to light to the care team. Wouldn't you want him to be the person that greets you when you arrived to the ED with your child? He will listen and take in the information you are offering to get you to the right treatment pathway in the ED. He won't take the patient and families concerns for granted. Some can get jaded and unresponsive as we check in the 100th patient with cough and congestion but Jim will provide individualized care when sorting patients in the new front end process. Catching a critical patient or higher acuity patient that could be missed without giving each person the individualized assessment they deserve.
Jim is an active member of the CCTRN group which continues to sharpen his skills and works hard to get education to residents on ordering medications or tests called "Order this not that". This resident education has helped to decreased orders that are not our practice standard placed into EPIC to avoid delays of getting the right treatment to patients in the emergency department.
I am inspired to be better and do better for patients and families when working with Jim!
