I look for James and when I am fortunate enough to find him seated at the nurses’ station next to my father’s room, I become filled with great joy and peace because I know my father will be well taken care of.
James is an excellent nurse. My father was admitted to HCA Pearland after going into Cardiac Arrest. Three to four days into my father’s ICU recovery, James was assigned to my father’s care. Immediately, I was drawn to his calm disposition, high-skill level, compassion, and overall professionalism. I noted James’ calm disposition first because during the high-stress, uncertain times associated with having a loved one in the Intensive Care Unit, a calm and confident professional best supports the social and emotional well-being of the patient and family. Yet, what I respect most about James is his commitment to supporting both his patients and their families. Every time James enters my father’s hospital room to provide him with care, he consistently checks in on my mother and I before leaving. Simply asking, “Are you two okay, do you need anything”? This small act of kindness sets James apart from the other skilled nurses who have provided excellent care. Yet, what propelled me to complete a DAISY Award form for James was when he recognized the look of confusion on my face after speaking with a doctor. James took the time to ask if I (we) understood what had been communicated and when I (we) replied that we were confused, James repeated and explained again to my mother and I everything the doctor had just shared; patiently answering our questions as best he could. This is just one of the many ways James has supported my father and our family. Now when I walk down the ICU hallway, I look for James and when I am fortunate enough to find him seated at the nurses’ station next to my father’s room, I become filled with great joy and peace because I know my father will be well taken care of and we, his family, will be able to make sound decisions because of James at the helm.
