The fact that he could talk about other things with Jamey, besides his healthcare needs, made the meetings more meaningful to him. My husband trusted him, which was saying a lot, because he did not always trust his healthcare providers.
It’s been a few months since my husband passed away. I wanted to nominate Jamey Moseman for the DAISY Award because he was more than a nurse to my husband. They developed a friendship that helped him, particularly on those days closer to his death. He had become isolated from others due to his health issues. He had his virtual aphasia group but didn’t have much in-person contact with others. The fact that he could talk about other things with Jamey, besides his healthcare needs, made the meetings more meaningful to him. He also felt that he could get good healthcare information from Jamey. He trusted him, which was saying a lot, because he did not always trust his healthcare providers.

There are times I had to contact Jamey outside his normal visits regarding my husband’s health. I appreciated Jamey’s quick response. Sometimes we asked Jamey to call about specific lab results and he would get back right away. Even though Jamey discussed things with the doctor, Jamey was the face of healthcare, and he truly appreciated it when providers were honest with him, like Jamey was. Those who “sugar-coated” a procedure to make it more acceptable ultimately made him lose trust for any future procedures they might have wanted him to get.

I think the HBPC program is a good program with the staff providing compassionate care. It was good not to have to go to the VA all the time. It was an ordeal to travel because of mobility and oxygen, sometimes taking an hour to get there. I particularly want to single out Jamey for the DAISY Award. My husband and I appreciated all he did for us.
