A young man of 42 collapsed at home and was found to be in full arrest by EMS. The patient was defibrillated and intubated then transferred to our CCU. His downtime was lengthy and his recovery was questionable. Jamie Biotti took care of this patient four days in a row and she worked very hard to move the patient towards recovery. Jamie took the time to find out more about the patient from the patient's spouse and two young sons, all the while providing emotional support to the entire family. The patient was extubated on a Friday but he had little strength and mobility in his extremities which was concerning and his ability to follow commands was inconsistent. Jamie performed range of motion exercises with him to increase his strength and mobility. Saturday Jamie assisted the patient up to a chair and she repeatedly and patiently lead him in exercies for his feet, legs and arms. She also worked with his speaking and by the end of Saturday, Jamie handed her Spectralink phone to the patient and he whispered to his wife that he loved her. Sunday Jamie had the patient walking from the chair to the edge of the room. Jamie found out that the patient was an artist and asked the spouse to bring in coloring supplies to assist him with his fine motor skills. The last day that Jamie took care of her patient, he was sitting in a chair, conversing and was able to brush his own teeth and comb his hair. His spouse was grateful to Jamie for her loving, attentive care. Jamie's coworker was in awe of Jamie's diligence towards her patient. There is no doubt that Jamie's excellent nursing care impacted this patient and his recovery.
