The provider had a newfound respect for Jamie and spinning babies. Jamie’s efforts saved the patient from a c/s and the complications that can follow a surgical procedure.
Jamie Campos is phenomenal at Spinning babies, a newer movement within the labor and delivery community, and especially here at Fairfax. She is also an excellent nurse and preceptor. She is always supportive and nurturing to the new nurses she is teaching while providing concrete feedback for them to learn and grow from. One example is when Jamie went above and beyond and brought putty in from home to assist her preceptee in practicing cervical exams, so she could feel the different dilations and stations of babies’ heads! Below are 2 examples I have seen on how Spinning babies has impacted our patients, but there are many stories that are similar.

I was the charge nurse one night and asked Jamie if she could help a patient who had been pushing on and off for approximately 4 hours, and still was not engaging well into the pelvis for delivery. The patient really did not want to have a c-section. Jamie was assigned as the circulating (OR Nurse) that night, and between OR cases she agreed to help, as she always does when she has a free moment from taking care of her own patients. She proceeded to ask the Doctor clinical questions regarding the baby's position and station to get an idea of how to best help her patient. The doctor was preparing the patient for the OR, but agreed to one final effort for a vaginal delivery. After about an hour of stretches, position changes and active management the patient was able to have a safe vaginal delivery. Without Jamie's help would have been in the OR for sure. The provider had a newfound respect for Jamie and spinning babies. Jamie’s efforts saved the patient from a c/s and the complications that can follow a surgical procedure.

Another example was when a patient arrived at the hospital for a scheduled induction. During our admission process, we ask questions about previous deliveries gathering information on the patient’s history and how past experiences could affect the current admission. In describing her experience this patient stated that "I was stuck at 4cm for 8 hours and had already had the c-section conversation once, then my night shift nurse came on and put me in all these different positions. 1 hour later I was 10cm ready to have my baby! I hope if that happens again, she is here to help me." With her permission, I looked back at her chart and saw that it was Jamie. As I said there are many more stories like these.

Not only is she more than willing to help her fellow nurses physically she has created tools for the team to use independently to help guide their practice and learning. She made and laminated reference cards with an algorithm on different positions to use based on where the baby is in the mom’s pelvis and the baby's position which allows for optimal patient outcomes for both mother and baby. Jamie successfully chaired our unit-based c/s reduction committee for two years. She and the team have been successfully working on reducing the rate of primary c-sections at Fairfax. She is continually being sought out by providers now to assist with patients who seem "stuck" in their labor and pushing progress and has been able to help patients and providers on countless occasions. We are so lucky to have her on our team.
