His birthday was approaching, and Jamie had a hand in throwing him a surprise birthdays bash with her fellow nurses and nurse practitioners.
Jamie is a resolute nurse who has worked in the CT stepdown for years. She is an incredible nurse, teammate, resource, and friend to her coworkers and her patients. There are countless examples of this, particularly when patients spend long lengths of time in the hospital.

One such example that truly warmed my heart is of a 48-year-old gentleman who spent six months in the hospital for a series of health issues affecting his lungs and GI system. As the weeks turned into months, he grew withdrawn and depressed. Jamie and other RN and non-RN team members bonded with him. His birthday was approaching, and Jamie had a hand in throwing him a surprise birthdays bash with her fellow nurses and nurse practitioners. They got together and got him gifts and sang happy birthday in his room. He was in tears. At that moment, our patient knew he had a whole other family at the hospital that genuinely cared about him.

As the time to prepare for discharge from the hospital was approaching, Jamie leaped into action. Upon hearing the news that he was going to leave the hospital to a rehab facility, Jamie coordinated, out of her own pocket, a barber to come and give him a haircut and shave. The patient was incredibly touched. He was speechless. The team of staff members lined the hallways leading to the exit of the unit to applaud his milestone of leaving the hospital. Jamie could not be there for his discharge, however, the acts of kindness and humanity that Jamie showed him were going to be with him always.

The trials and stresses of Covid still linger in our hearts, draining us of our reserves of empathy and compassion. It is heartwarming to know that nurses like Jamie still have those reserves of kindness and compassion to lend to patients when they are at their lowest. And sometimes it is those very actions that keep us going and help fill us up again. Jamie is a role model to all who collaborate with her and a hero, especially to her patients. She embodies what it means to be a DAISY Nurse, and we are honored to work alongside her.
