Jamie Pate is known for taking care of very sick patients and always being a patient advocate. On a particularly busy morning in the ER, during a shift change, a patient was waiting for admission to the PICU. Jamie was the oncoming RN and report had already been called. She was waiting until the unit was ready prior to sending the patient upstairs. Upon entering the room to assess, Jamie realized that the patient was deteriorating at a quick pace. As soon as she realized this, she called out for the doctor to come into the room. At that exact time, a Code Blue was called overhead. Since this was early morning and there was only one ER physician in the ER at that time, Jamie recognized that there would not be a physician available to help her. She used her resources and began thinking about what would be best for the patient. As many know, it is not in our ER practice to transport unstable patients to the unit. However, Jamie knew that there was a doctor and nurses ready and able to care better for this patient. She quickly called and said she was on the way. After getting the okay for transport, she and the respiratory therapist took the patient in the elevator. After what seemed like a long elevator ride, they arrived in the PICU where the team was ready to care for the patient.
Jamie is a true DAISY Nurse because she handles all patients and families in a more considerate and thoughtful manner. I know and trust that Jamie's patients will be well provided for, whether it be acute nursing care of a critical patient, comfort measures for a psych patient, or a blanket for a cold child.
