I am a patient care technician at Henrico Doctors' Forest in the float pool department. A couple of weeks ago, I was orienting on SICU. The nurse Jamie got called to a code in the ED and came back up an hour later, distraught. She then was able to get herself together and tell us that the patient had been hit by a tractor-trailer who ran a red light. The patient had coded in the ED and the nurses and doctors were able to revive him and take him to surgery. Once the surgery was finished, he was brought to the SICU. He was very sick and had 2 chest tubes. From the moment the patient came up, Jamie was in the room. All the nurses were helping her get him stable. Unfortunately, the patient coded again, and Jamie started CPR. Multiple people including myself ran in the room and switched with Jamie doing CPR. Jamie then helped the doctors try to get him stable. Sadly, the patient didn't make it. I wanted to recognize Jamie for showing such compassion, grace, and respect to the patient and his family. All of the nurses did an amazing job, but Jaimie took initiative. It was a very humbling experience to be a part of.
