We have a nurse on our unit who is a true leader and standout. She is an excellent resource and charge nurse for the staff. She maintains a positive attitude and keeps the ship sailing even during times of utter chaos. I have seen admiral examples of leadership from this charge nurse during the year. Although there are numerous examples demonstrating her compassion and commitment to the ICARE Values, I will detail one event that left me speechless.
A few months ago, the squad brought a pulseless infant to the department. They were unsuccessful with resuscitation efforts but needed a place for the family to come and say their goodbyes and grieve the loss of their precious baby. Our charge nurse, with the assistance from another outstanding associate, prepared the baby for viewing. The team worked tirelessly to track down supplies that would make the viewing more manageable such as a blanket and a place to lay the little baby. During this time, the department did not have these items, so this charge nurse made several calls to get needed supplies. In addition, she went to the gift shop and purchased a stamp so the parents could get footprints from the baby. It was a gift the parents will cherish forever.
In addition, the parents were very concerned that the baby would be placed in the morgue. This charge nurse wrapped the baby in a blanket and physically carried it to the morgue for the family. She stayed with the baby as long as the family desired. She cried with the mother, she comforted each family member, and she gave her all that day to this family who needed her most. I was never prouder of my staff, but especially Jamie. She went above and beyond for this infant and the family. She demonstrated every ICARE value to the fullest and I was very proud to say I am her manager.
Jamie is a true leader for the unit. She works tirelessly to make sure her co-workers have what they need. She is constantly checking in with everyone and takes the more challenging patients herself. She is in school getting her master's degree at the present.
In addition, she volunteered to write a piece of work for our award submission. I can always count on her to step up and be my voice when management is not available. She does any task asked of her. Jamie is a true asset to our department.
