My dad is a retired professor who taught for 23 years. He has touched the lives of countless students and faculty in his tenure. He has not let illness and necessary devices slow him down. The other day his device became not functional, this became painful quickly and required medical intervention. The Princess Anne Hospital was the closest, we had been there before and we knew they would take good care of him.
It was a warm evening and the triage nurse at the entrance of the emergency department met us with a smile. After some quick vitals and registration, we were escorted to a private room. My dad's discomfort continued to escalate and as we waited, we hit the pain button on the TV remote and prayed for some relief. With much anticipation, we were not sure who we would meet next. We heard a gentle knock on the door and a tall nurse with a smile that brightened the room introduced himself and explained he would be helping us out. Jamison was the definition of compassion as soon as he stepped in the door. His smooth warm demeanor was very calming to my dad who at this point was beyond uncomfortable. He shared what he was going to do and even went to retrieve a special device. He removed the existing device carefully and showed discretion and empathy for my dad, and could not have been more professional and comforting. The insertion of the new catheter was just as smooth, which is important considering the sensitivity of the area. My dad expressed almost immediate relief as the pain subsided. He told Jamison that he was a "natural" and that he was the "best" he had experienced, and he has had quite a few procedures. Jamison explained he really loved doing what he does and it was evident in his passion, sense of humor and attitude toward his patients. He also shared that he recently became a father and beamed a huge smile as he shared a photo of his six-month-old son. He was gracious and patient as he listened to my dad share some of his life experiences, he was genuinely interested and he listened reflectively. He spent a generous amount of his shift with us and his humility was infectious.
Note: This is Jamison's 2nd DAISY Award!
