Jan worked with the oncology team to tailor the sequence of my medications in order to make the infusion process more tolerable.
I would like to nominate Jan Roberts, RN of the Diebold Family Cancer Center, for a DAISY Award.
Jan was assigned as my nurse to administer chemotherapy in response to my stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis. For the last eight months, Jan has provided me with an exceptional level of nursing care and support - something that has been instrumental in helping me to successfully endure an otherwise difficult treatment regimen.
Jan has a meticulous clinical expertise coupled with extraordinary empathy and compassion - a combination that is worthy of recognition. An example of this is when Jan worked with the oncology team to tailor the sequence of my medications in order to make the infusion process more tolerable. Also, when first administering one of my drugs (Decadron), it caused an unpleasant "bee sting" sensation. Jan immediately reduced the rate at which the drug was being pushed in order to spare me this discomfort. We still laugh about it even now.
Jan is fully engaged and responsive to the needs not just of her patients, but also their supporting family members - taking the time to make them feel welcome and included.
No one really knows what it's like to experience such a journey - unless you've been through one yourself. However, Jan is a nurse with extraordinary empathy and compassion - she seemed to really understand what I was going through, and despite all my anxiety and trepidation, Jan made me feel supported and safe. On my lowest days, Jan gave me the strength to carry on; for this, I am eternally grateful.
I consider Jan to be a true ambassador for the "caring profession" and a shining example of the excellent service offered by the Diebold Family Cancer Center.
