I am honored to nominate Jan Tssario for the DAISY Award. Every day Jan demonstrates compassionate care to her staff, peers, and especially to our patients.
On this particular day, Jan was called by one of our social workers to assist with a very frustrated and upset family member of a patient who was in the process of dying. This family member was clearly overwhelmed. Jan met with this family along with the social worker. She was compassionate, caring, and kind. She listened and validated their frustration. Jan was able to help alleviate the frustration and concern of this family member; she was able to provide answers the family had about the end of life. She also set up a plan with nursing to have them check in periodically for any room changes and for the bedside nurse to call the family immediately once it was thought that the patient was imminent.
Jan sat and held the patient's hand while the family toured another room option for the patient to transfer to. She provided the family with her contact information and was genuine when telling the family that she would come and sit with the patient while they were not in the room. I know this family very much appreciated this gesture. With everything in place, the family was comfortable to return home to get some rest.
The following morning, Jan called into the social worker and the social worker provided an update. Jan had already been to the bakery and was heading in to give the family some sweet rolls. Unfortunately, the patient passed away.
This is just one very small example of Jan's dedication to our patients; she has a huge compassionate heart and unending kindness to all she crosses paths with. There are not enough DAISY's in this world to cover all of Jan's expertise and extraordinary care that she provides daily.
