I am honored to nominate Janaka Johnson-Smith, RN, for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and clinical excellence she consistently demonstrates in our inpatient Behavioral Health unit.
Working in behavioral health requires a unique balance of clinical expertise, emotional intelligence, patience, and unwavering empathy. Janaka exemplifies these qualities every single day. She cares for patients during some of the most vulnerable and challenging moments of their lives, yet she approaches each individual with dignity, respect, and genuine compassion.
One of the most remarkable aspects of her practice is her ability to de-escalate high-risk situations with calm confidence. During moments of acute crisis—whether involving severe anxiety, psychosis, mania, or emotional distress—she maintains a steady presence that reassures both patients and staff. Her therapeutic communication skills are exceptional. She listens without judgment, validates patients’ experiences, and creates a safe environment where individuals feel heard and supported.
Beyond her direct patient care, Janaka is a strong advocate for her patients. She collaborates effectively with interdisciplinary team members to ensure individualized, trauma-informed care plans are implemented. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure safety while preserving patient dignity.
Her teamwork and leadership also make a meaningful impact on the unit. She supports her colleagues during challenging shifts, mentors new staff with patience, and models professionalism in every interaction.
