There are not many times in one’s life when there is a pinnacle moment when all you’ve ever known, drastically changes, and your life takes an alternate pathway you thought you’d never experience. This moment for me occurred when I fell from my mountain bike and sustained a spinal cord injury. Having worked as a Registered Nurse and Midwife at the Royal for some years before my accident I cannot adequately explain the confusion and shift in vulnerability that occurs when you enter your area of work as a patient, not a worker.

The care I received from all before arriving at the Royal and during my admission, was exceptional. I will never be able to describe the gratitude I hold towards all those who supported me and my family through a traumatic and confusing time. Throughout all the wonderful care and support I received when I was a patient at the Royal, there was one person who stood apart from the others, Jane. 

Jane's exceptional care made a significant difference in my recovery. Not only did she provide me with the medical attention I needed, but she also went above and beyond to make sure my family felt supported and informed throughout my admission. Her compassionate and attentive approach to patient care was evident in everything she did, from her willingness to answer our questions, to her ability to make us feel as comfortable as possible in the circumstances. Jane provided me with a personalized care approach that included holistic solutions and approaches. She was a passionate advocate for me when I was unable to do so myself.

I had gone from being independent to immediately dependent on others overnight. She never made me feel like a burden and empowered me to begin to regain confidence in myself and my body. She took the time to explain and ensure I understood what was happening during a considerable period of uncertainty. She was patient, kind, and empathetic in her approach. Her reassuring words and positive outlook on life helped me see beyond my current situation and focus on the positives ahead.

Jane was a critical person during this time, and the value I gained from her presence and care is immeasurable. She went above and beyond to ensure that I received the best care possible. I will be forever grateful for what Jane did, her actions, and her approach to care.
