Jane is the best nurse manager I have ever worked for in my 13 years as a nurse and in fact, even in my career pre-nursing, she is one of the best. Jane truly cares for every employee that she has on staff on a personal level and all staff know and feel this from their personal interactions with Jane. Jane manages to walk the fine line between interpersonal relationships with employees and being their boss.
I admire her for many reasons including the pride and care she has in and for her nursing unit and staff. She is constantly trying to maintain an aura of happiness despite the many challenges she faces both environmentally and organizationally. She functions as your champion and advocate, when you need it, as a shoulder to cry on when that is what is required, a place of safety where you can vent and talk openly and honestly and as a caring, warm human being interested in hearing about your personal life celebrations, or trials. Jane always gives you her best advice and always gives you her undivided attention when you are speaking with her. Her "open door" policy was a refreshing change in management styles for me.
As we all know in nursing, it is all about the perception of the other person, and in the way that Jane manages, leaves her employees with the perception of love, caring and advocacy on their behalf. On a personal note, I have learned many things over the last 2+ years working alongside Jane on B5. I know that I can always count on her to guide me to the correct pathway, to support my ideas and changes, and to treat me with respect, courtesy, honesty and caring.
If I had not already been happy with Jane as my manager, what she did when I suddenly became critically ill, just 8 months after starting on B5, would have sealed the deal for me. Jane not only came to see me in the hospital, but she would respond to every phone call, email or text sent, with promptness, caring, and concern, honest, true concern for my well-being and health. This is just one reason why Jane is such a spectacular Nurse Manager. Though I have never seen her work as a bedside RN I am positively sure that she would be a wonderful caregiver whom I would entrust my own care and that of my family.
