Jane is the definition of nursing excellence and has created an environment on Tower 8 that is full of compassion, mutual respect, and professional development. She leads by example and advocates for everyone around her.
Where do I begin... Jane Pena is an Extraordinary Nurse leader on Tower 8 Transplant Metabolic Unit. I can only hope to inspire and guide nurses the way Jane has in her leadership role. Jane is the definition of nursing excellence and has created an environment on Tower 8 that is full of compassion, mutual respect, and professional development. She leads by example and advocates for everyone around her. She is empathic and understanding of all the hard work her staff do and continually shows gratitude to everyone. She is always visible on the unit and is in constant communication with her staff. She not only engages with her staff but also rounds on our Tower 8 patients. Jane embodies what it is to be a UC Davis Nurse Leader.
She is committed to not only her nurses but our patient population as well. Jane is a Donate Life Ambassador and attends many volunteer events to educate and support the general public on organ donation. Jane is very involved in the community with public health and is always gathering Tower 8 nurses to attend these events with her. Many Tower 8 nurses have become Donate Life Ambassadors themselves because of Jane's enthusiasm and compassion, I myself being one of them. Jane also was instrumental in helping create culturally sensitive education materials and evaluating the health literacy levels of our diverse population of transplant.
Jane also serves as a leader and representative of the Asian Pacific American community at UC Davis Health. She is on the Board of Directors on the Philippine Nursing Association and is involved in APASA-Asian Pacific American Systemwide Alliance. Jane continues to offer her services by creating community events, advocating for the underserved, and volunteering when needed. She continues to promote, pursue, and implement diversity, equity, and inclusion at UC Davis Health.
Jane also brought to life CipherRounds which has made our leadership rounding more effective and meaningful. It has improved our patient outcomes by enhancing our RN/patient communication, staff efficiency and accountability and has enhanced the visibility of our nurse leaders.
She motivates staff with a shared vision and guides those to continue to excel in their nursing career. She offers staff many different kinds of opportunities for professional development, all while giving them the resources to succeed. On Tower 8, we have multiple nurses' complete quality improvement projects, poster presentations, nursing specialty certifications, clinical nurse III ladder, evidence-based practice fellowship, attend national conferences, part of and or chair/co-chair hospital committees, and champion nursing specialties. She always supports growth in the nursing field and will guide you to what fits best for you as a professional nurse. For example, she has helped me develop from clinical nurse II, III, and now an AN2. I have chaired/co-chaired hospital-wide committees, completed quality improvement projects, attended National Conferences, have done multiple poster presentations, and acquired specialty certifications. I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Jane continuing to support, educate, and provide the resources I need to achieve these goals.
Jane has created an environment here on Tower 8 that supports compassion, trust, and gratitude. She has supported the start of our Support U Committee to increase staff satisfaction and decrease burnout. This has helped staff feel that their efforts have been recognized and staff feel appreciated. This has led to a decrease in sick calls and burnout. Jane also is constantly bringing in coffee, food, treats, and drinks just to put a smile on her staff's faces. Jane has organized unit hikes, runs, holiday parties, and social events to increase staff morale and build relationships off the unit.
I not only speak for myself but many Tower 8 nurses, and we feel extremely fortunate to have Jane as our nurse leader. She continues to motivate staff to be the best they can be not only for themselves but in the end for our patients as well. I hope to one day be the kind of leader Jane is.
