Her combined skills, knowledge, and experience have been exceptional.
I would like to nominate Jane Hagan, faculty at OHSU School of Nursing, for her long-time commitment to teaching nursing care for older adults to the next generation of nurses. This nomination may not be a typical DAISY nomination, but I thought that the Academic DAISY Award would be perfect for Jane because of her contribution to teaching nursing care for older adults and her dedication to teaching patient-centered and compassionate care. Her combined skills, knowledge, and experience have been exceptional.

Jane delivered 2-hour “Gladys” semi-simulation activities three terms every year for 2015-2022 to first-year nursing students. Gladys is an older adult case study patient for the N210 health promotion class. What they did as a volunteer activity was to make Gladys come alive. They delivered “Gladys” semi-simulation activity as an in-person class activity. They also adopted the case study to an online version during COVID online teaching. This semi-simulation experience in the classroom experience presents an excellent opportunity to practice patient-centered communication skills, specifically motivational interviewing, which is now taught a week before the Gladys activity. Through this activity, students realize how clinical priorities shift, how grief impacts ADLs, the impact of family relationships in health maintenance, patients’ perception of access to health, fall prevention, blood pressure management, and how to apply motivational interviewing skills in patient care. Jane led the organization of the semi-simulation day with course faculty and led in-class group activities leading to the semi-simulation experience and debriefing sessions. She also made the experience inclusive and welcoming. The Gladys semi-simulation has been so well received by students while offering an excellent educational opportunity. Jane is such a dedicated educator, and I would love for her to be acknowledged.
