There was recently a very challenging and complex patient in CVICU who had experienced many setbacks. His wife of many years had been very anxious and worried. The patient had been responsive – but with frequent episodes of agitation and depression. This past February 14th , his nurse asked him if he would like to recognize his wife with a card on Valentine’s day. The patient (who had a trach and was on the ventilator) immediately responded and nodded that he would like to do so. Janel was so moved by his response that she asked if he would also like to get her a flower – and he became more responsive and actually smiled. She went to the gift shop and purchased a single rose, a balloon and a card – and then she helped the patient sign the card – mostly on his own.

Later that day his wife arrived – and was very moved by the generosity of the nurse who went out of her way to make that day special for them both. The staff in the unit were tearful witnessing this kind and beautiful gesture. Dr. Duke came in the following morning and seeing the balloon and flower made a comment – thinking that the wife had gotten them for the patient – he then discovered that Janel had gone out of her way for the patient and was extremely moved. This simple act of kindness and generosity exemplifies the extraordinary compassion and family centered care that makes a difference in the life of a patient.

Dr. Duke was so moved that he called the CNO personally to say how touched he was and what a positive impact this had on the patient’s psyche and what a difference this made in managing such a difficult case. He wanted to be sure that Ms. Ray was recognized for her caring intervention, and Judy submitted the nomination on his behalf, Janel was also nominated by her peers for this same kind act.

Thank you, Janel Ray, our March DAISY. You are being recognized for your act of compassion, patient and family centered care – and for exemplifying excellence that extends beyond what is commonplace.
