Janelle is indeed extraordinary. She supported my father during his recent 10-day stay in the hospital. She has the sweetest temperament and went out of her way to know him and do all the little extras that made him feel important and cared for. She took the time to engage him in conversation about mutual interests, and shared personal tidbits about herself, like her birthday, her impending birth, her love of lobster. On bad days, she knew just how to tease him into a smile. When he had to stay longer than expected because of the winter storm, she printed some crosswords, knowing it was a favorite pastime. And of all the nurses I met while supporting my father, she was the most available to and forthcoming with me. It is really difficult to understand how and when to connect with various doctors, case workers, and physical therapists at the Miriam, but Janelle acted as my liaison. One way or the other, she got the information and attention we needed. It always seemed as if she was as interested and engaged as I was. It wasn't just a job for her. It was a way of being.
