Ms. Carlo spoke with so much compassion and empathy to the patient.
On one occasion in OBCC facility, an all Male prison on Rikers Island in medical intake, a transgender woman was expressing to Ms. Carlo how she was being sexually harassed daily in her housing unit and on numerous occasions and was afraid of being sexually attacked in the night hours while asleep. The patient was in distress and was very emotional and stated she "was afraid to sleep". Ms. Carlo spoke with so much compassion and empathy to the patient and told the patient she would try her best to have her sent to a new housing area. The patient gave up hope after an hour of waiting thinking nothing would be done because of the nature of the facility with staffing shortages with DOC and stated "I only have one more month of this I'll be okay." Ms. Carlo told the patient, "No, you don't have one more day of being afraid, DOC will be transferring you to the women's facility called Rosie's." The patient starting crying and saying thank you so much repetitively. I watched as Ms. Carlo was very empathetic for the patient and ensured the patient that she would be able to adjust better at the new facility. Ms. Carlo is an amazing nurse. She is always willing to teach staff and she is always willing to learn new skills. She goes above and beyond and always ensures medical staff feel safe working in clinic or express safety concerns to DON or Chief Nursing Officer.
