The NICU admitted a critically ill neonate that needed an emergency blood transfusion, I immediately called Janet who was working in MIU, and asked if she could come down to NICU and help us. Janet immediately handed off her patients, she was in charge that day. Janet stopped everything she was doing and came down to NICU to help with blood administration and documentation. By the time I returned to the unit with the blood Janet had already stepped into action, preparing the transfusion, she also was teaching our new nurses the process and procedure. We were having issues with EPIC that day, and it was Janet who recognized and then brainstormed to run and get downtime forms recognizing the blood bank wasn’t able to validate the ordering physician. Janet then corrected the issue within 10 minutes and the baby was able to receive the life-saving blood product. Janet saved that baby’s life with her quick thinking and subsequent actions. This isn’t the first time Janet has stepped in and risen to the occasion handing off her previously assigned responsibilities to come and help us in the NICU. Her dedication to Nursing excellence and compassionate care, not to mention the amazing team player is why Janet is a DAISY Nurse.
