Janet has many years of experience and really embraces the art of what it means to be a great nurse. She is a mentor to other nurses within the department and always holds her patient and their family member at the center of her care. Janet always puts her patients and their family members at ease by sitting and making a connection in the short period of time she has to make that connection. On a daily basis she keeps the quality of the care we provide at her forefront.
She attended a conference recently and noted that there were documented cases of patients suffering over dose with the multi-dose Cetacaine spray. She took it upon herself to perform a literature research regarding the single dose spray before collaborating with the Anesthesia Department, pharmacy representatives, the Chief of Endoscopy, nurse peers, and nursing management. The research noted that this was a potential hazard to our patients within the Endoscopy department as clinicians often used multiple sprays of benzocaine and often spray longer than the duration recommended. Doses administered during endoscopic procedures may exceed manufacturer's recommendations for several reasons. First, unclear package instructions for using the products may lead to overdoses. After review at the P&T committee, it was determined that we would no longer stock the multi-dose spray and instead utilize the Hurricane product, which is a single safe dose for patients. This is only one example of how Janet utilizes her knowledge and dedication to ensure that the very best quality is provided to each and every patient. Janet is a role model to all nurses. She is an advocate always for her patients and always generates enthusiasm and positive energy toward meeting the challenges that we face in nursing daily.
Janet exemplifies the essence of professional nursing and was instrumental in advocating for her patients in ensuring that the quality of our scope reprocessing program be reenergized and standardized to meet the SGNA & CDC guidelines. Her advocacy was instrumental in changing the process and creating a team approach to the staffing levels and ensuring that the competencies of each staff member were at the highest level in accordance with the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates.
Janet is instrumental in maintaining trusting relationships, showing empathy when her patients receive a bad diagnosis, advocating for both her patients and peers to ensure that all professional standards are maintained. She is an asset to the profession of nursing and is a DAISY every day!
