Janet is a shining example of the very heart of Nursing in all she does. She is passionate about Caring/Heart science and has worked tirelessly to begin the enculturation in NCAL. It's amazing what one person can do and how many things Janet has been involved in over the past year. Even representing us globally in Abu Dhabi! I can't think of a leader more deservong of this prestigious honor than Janet. We are so very blessed to work with her and know her as the genuine person she is.
I would like to nominate Janet Sohal for the DAISY Nurse Leader award to recognize and reward her commitment to Kaiser Permanente Northern California - she has been instrumental in leading the NSA's key programs and initiatives - from leadership and degree programs, caring science, research and innovation, Magnet - Janet has shown her dedication and triumph whilst leading her teams and guiding our medical centers. Janet is such a joy to work with. When she hops on a call, she makes my day better. She is always positive, she is inclusive, and she is committed to get the job done. She checks in on her teams frequently, always ensures we have what we need, always willing to get her hands dirty with us :) and is always willing to just be a friend. She is loved and respected by all! She is the true embodiment of a leader!

It is my pleasure to nominate Janet Sohal for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. I have worked with Janet since 2017 when we were both Nursing Professional Development Directors (NPDDs) and more recently as Regional PCS Directors.  Over the years I have witnessed how Janet has consistently created an environment where compassionate, skillful care thrives, by weaving the Caritas Processes (CP) into her work.

As an NPDD, Janet embodied the seventh CP by meeting staff members where they were in their professional development journey. Whether it is creating a safe space for learning a new skill, especially when it came to new technology implementations, or encouraging nurses to obtain their professional certification or purse a higher degree, Janet consistently inspires others by creating an environment where attributes of trust, compassion, mutual respect, continued professional development and ethical behavior are modeled and supported.

Over the past two years, I have witnessed the impacts of Janet's compassionate leadership style as she has created an environment that encourages problem-solving and critical thinking by being accessible, available, and responsive to the needs of her team and local facility nurses at all levels. Janet leads a regional team that supports the structures, processes, and outcomes that will lead all KP NCAL medical centers toward Magnet status. Janet and her team provide vital support for foundational activities to aid local medical centers in their Magnet journey progression. A few examples include aligning the KP NSA program to NAOM 2030 and Magnet program goals to reach 80% RN – BSN, establishing a standardized KP NCAL EBP program by leveraging the academic partnership with UCSF, and supporting local medical centers to standardize governance structures to develop a plan to get to the next level or a plan for sustainability. In addition, Janet has been instrumental in the creation of the seven nurse development programs at UCSF by effectively communicating KP’s organizational priorities and aligning them with the structures, processes, and outcomes we seek.

Finally, the cherry on top is Janet’s humble leadership style. She only shares that she was a presenter at the 2nd International Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Congress in Abu Dhabi, when, in fact, she was the closing keynote speaker introducing Caring Science and Heart Math to a whole new audience of nursing students, professionals, and leaders. Again, through Janet’s infectious enthusiasm, the audience was on its feet, following along with Janet as she led them through a patient-centered, evidenced-based somatic exercise, a HeartMath technique, and an important message, The Miracles of Caring Moments that reminded us all of why we chose to become nurses and the importance of the work that we do.

I end this nomination with the same words she shared with other nurses in Abu Dhabi, “Ethics of Face and Hand”: A Reminder: We literally hold another person’s Life in our hands and are the source for sustaining our own and others' humanity (Levinas et al.).” Janet, as a nurse leader, models this very well. Thank you, Janet, for your leadership, kindness, compassion, and enthusiasm.

Janet is a remarkable leader. She goes the extra 100 miles to ensure that each one of us has the support we need to be successful. She set expectations, and is there every step of the way. She has made multiple trips to various medical centers to support them with their professional governance council kick-offs and Magnet journey and has participated in and led several nurse Honor Guard events throughout the region.

Janet Sohal is a leader who leads from the heart. Janet is one of those leaders who brings out the best in people. Her humility and heart of caring for everyone on her team amaze me. I found in Janet a leader who does not believe in hierarchy but instead believes in working together as a team to achieve the ultimate purpose: excellence.

Janet has led multiple projects centered around nursing excellence and continues to work with different leaders in the organization to drive nursing excellence. Her ability to listen—I mean really listen—has led to leveraging her team's strengths to achieve great results. Janet, as an educator, brings innovative ideas that increase staff engagement during staff training and leadership programs.

Janet lives out the caring science principles of "loving-kindness," "inspiration," and "nurture." Her compassion and humility are unparalleled. She inspires her team to bring their BEST self to work. I once heard one of her staff say, "My heart does not skip a beat when I get a call from her like it did with my former supervisors."  She creates an environment where her staff can THRIVE and have JOY and MEANING at work. Janet is a great leader and a great asset to Kaiser Permanente.
