Since joining our department as a charge nurse in 2022, Janette has not only demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities but has also helped transition our unit into a thriving and harmonious environment. Her unique human-centered leadership approach has allowed her to make significant contributions to creating a healthy work environment in the Medical ICU. Janette embodies the three essential traits of a human-centered leader: Awakener, Connector, and Upholder. Her exceptional abilities in each of these areas have produced outstanding results and fostered a sense of empowerment and excellence among the entire team. As an Awakener, Janette consistently reinforces correct nursing practices, which has led to improved patient outcomes. She tirelessly champions for MD-RN rounding compliance in our unit and has significantly increased participation. Janette ensures nursing representation by attending rounds when bedside nurses are unavailable, and she diligently follows up with them to ensure documentation of involvement. Her dedication has influenced other relief charge nurses to follow suit. As a result, our compliance rate has soared from a meager 69% to an impressive average of 90%. Janette's exemplary behavior and team-oriented approach have undoubtedly contributed to our remarkable performance. Janette's role as a Connector within our unit has been truly transformative. Her infectious motivation and innovative ideas have unleashed the untapped potential within our team. A prime example of her influence is the successful implementation of integrative nursing practices in our unit. Janette delivered a captivating 15-minute presentation on the various integrative nursing interventions and how they can be seamlessly integrated into ICU care. Her passionate advocacy for holistic patient care has driven the development of a bereavement cart specifically designed for our MICU. This thoughtfully crafted cart, complete with a beautiful centerpiece flower, a calming reusable candle, and lavender aromatherapy, demonstrates Janette's commitment to enhancing the overall patient and family experience. Janette's role as an Upholder of our unit's culture of caring is truly remarkable. She consistently demonstrates a genuine concern for others and recognizes the humanity within herself and her colleagues. During her rounds, Janette astutely identified a struggling new graduate nurse who was overwhelmed with multiple medication administrations due to limited IV access. In that crucial moment, she stepped in to provide immediate assistance and ongoing guidance for future scenarios, ensuring the nurse had the necessary resources and support to succeed. The gratitude expressed by the new graduate nurse in an email to me reflects the profound impact Janette has had on his critical thinking skills and nursing care development. In her capacity as the new Clinical Nurse IV, Janette has excelled in advancing nursing practice and enhancing the quality of care among bedside nurses. Through her exceptional leadership, she has helped to create a healthy environment that elevates nursing practice and fosters staff engagement.
